After a short introduction of the ins and outs of story-telling, Isis van Sturtewagen and I will put you straight to work.
You’ll spend the beginning of the afternoon doing a Love Shoot, photographing a real couple. Weather permitting we’ll head outdoors, so make sure you bring a jacket and wear comfortable shoes.
While you’re snapping away, we’ll teach you various story-telling techniques. We’ll give you the chance to apply each technique, to try it out for yourself and figure out what does and doesn’t work for you. Everyone has their own style, and this workshop will help you refine yours.
We’ll look at ways of creating emotion that go further than asking the couple to smile. We’ll guide you through working with focus. We’ll give you tips for how to stay sensitive to opportunities. How can you make sure you don’t miss a special moment, that chance for the perfect picture?
After the photoshoot, we’ll sit down to learn about the next element of story-telling: making a selection. Making a selection is what creates the narrative of the story. It can be difficult to know where to start, and don’t even get me started on knowing where to end! We’ll show you our way of selecting photos, with some ideas for how we would edit and order the pictures.
You’ll leave the workshop with the techniques for taking more expressive photographs, inspiration for tailoring narratives and inspiration for your photographic voice.
